Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise as a young child. Her aunt worked in the evening shift as a nurse so she could pursue her love for theater and art throughout the day. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's model of the power of art as an effective vehicle for social activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was socially aware and taught her to say something through the art of. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and raised. DuVernay's dad recalled the protests for civil rights that took place over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama.
