Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise as a young child. Her aunt worked in the evening shift as a nurse so she could pursue her love for theater and art throughout the day. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's model of the power of art as an effective vehicle for social activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was socially aware and taught her to say something through the art of. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and raised. DuVernay's dad recalled the protests for civil rights that took place over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. DuVernay's summers spent in Alabama's Selma would influence her later on to create an animated film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in the state of California in 1990. In 1990, she completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood CA. DuVernay began to produce for broadcast journalism while she was in her university. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned the task of watching the residence and scrutinizing the waste from one of the juries. In the course of her tasks she began to feel dissatisfied by journalism, and shifted into the business of publicity. DuVernay was hired straight after graduating from college as a junior publicist at a small studio. The year 1999 was the time she founded her own firm of public relations called The DuVernay Agency.
